<title>Battling for hearts and minds</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12294/4115</link>
<description>Battling for hearts and minds
Kelkitli, Fatma Asli
This article examines the sources of Turkish, Iranian, and Saudi soft power in the Middle East through the utilization of Joseph Nye's soft power concept. The study is based on three claims. The first claim argues that there exists an increasing discrepancy between espoused values and actual practices in Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia at home, which may undermine their soft power. The second claim contends that cognizant of the fact that the Palestinian cause is a major concern for most of the Middle Eastern people, all of the three states pursue an active foreign policy to alleviate the plight of the Palestinians. Finally, the last claim upholds that Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia have been benefitting, albeit to varying extents, from high culture products such as education and popular culture products such as mass entertainment and tourism to appeal to the public in the Middle East.

<title>Orientalist Encounters at School</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12294/3978</link>
<description>Orientalist Encounters at School
Can, Sule; Baran, Taha
After the Syrian crisis, the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey is estimated to be approximately four million. Currently, one of the most significant aspects of the integration process of refugees in Turkey is the education of refugee students. Investigating the process of the co-education of refugee and Turkish citizen students in public schools provides some insight into what the future might hold for these refugees and sheds light on the dynamics of living together with locals. The first aim of this research is to explore the reception of the refugee students by the teachers in order to understand inclusion and/or exclusion mechanisms in education. Second, this study examines the roles that ethno-religious and political identities play in relations between teachers and refugee students by focusing on ethno-religious identity and discrimination. Drawing on the debates on orientalism and securitization in migration, it explicates the ways in which teachers justify their judgments and impressions of the refugee students through orientalist codes. To achieve this, public school teachers from two districts of Istanbul were invited to take part in this ethnographic research which was conducted in 2018.

<title>Adaletin Kantçı Zemini</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12294/3733</link>
<description>Adaletin Kantçı Zemini
Yalçın, Özgür
Siyaset felsefesinin temel sorunu, bireysel özgürlük ile siyasal otoriteyi bağdaştırmaktır. Adalet kavrayışları&#13;
bireysel özgürlük ile siyasal otorite arasındaki ilişkinin nasıl kurulması gerektiğini belirlerler. Özellikle Kantçı&#13;
siyaset felsefesinde bireysel özgürlük düşüncesi adaletin temelini veren ilkedir. Ancak, Kantçılar arasında&#13;
özgürlüğün siyasal adalet bağlamında nasıl anlaşılması gerektiği konusunda anlaşmazlık vardır. Rainer&#13;
Forst’un çalışmaları Kant’ın siyaset felsefesini özgürlüğü ahlaki özerklik temelinde derinlemesine ve bütünsel&#13;
olarak yeniden inşa girişimlerinden birini örneklemektedir. Bu makalede ilk olarak Rainer Forst’un siyasal&#13;
adalet kavrayışını tanıtıp eleştirel bir şekilde değerlendiriyorum. Sonrasında, Forst’un Kantçı siyasal adalet&#13;
yorumuna alternatif olarak, ahlaki özerkliğe dayanmayan, daha kabul edilebilir bir Kantçı siyasal adalet&#13;
kavrayışını önererek kısaca tartışıyorum. Kant’ın doğuştan özgürlüğe hakkı olma düşüncesinin siyasal adaletin&#13;
temelini veren ilke olduğunu ileri sürüyorum.
